Chubby beaver rescued from iron fence goes home
It took the beaver a couple of weeks to regain its strength, the city said
A chubby beaver city workers found stuck upside down in a wrought-iron fence last month has returned home to his family.
An animal services officer used soap to pry out the beaver wedged between the bars of a fence on April 25.
It took the beaver a couple of weeks to regain its strength, the city said. Then last week, Hamilton Animal Services workers appeared to use a cat carrier to transport it to the wild and return to its original habitat.
The beaver was discovered "arse over tea kettle" in a fence on a private property last month, the city said. Animal services worker Sara Mombourquette used soap to slip it out of the bars.
The beaver's sharp incisors, the city said then, "were not helpful in cutting through the iron fence."
The beaver stayed at the Hamilton Animal Services shelter, and then the Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge in Jarvis, Ont.
The city advises anyone who sees sick, injured or orphaned wildlife to do the following:
- Stay back from the animal.
- Look for signs of injury such as blood, loss of fur or feathers, or trouble breathing.
- Leave it in its natural habitat.
- Watch the animal to see if it will leave on its own. Some animals play dead to defend themselves against other animals.
- Call 905-574-3433 to report injured or dead wild animals.
