19-year-old Hamilton man drowns in Lake Erie

Two people drowned in separate incidents in Lake Erie this weekend, police say.

There were two unrelated drowning incidents in Lake Erie this weekend: OPP

A 19-year-old man from Hamilton, Hussein Da Silva, drowned in Lake Erie on Saturday, Ontario Provincial Police say.

OPP, along with fire and paramedic crews responded to a call around 4:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon about a man that had been swimming with two friends in Lake Erie in the outer bay. The caller said he had gone underwater and never resurfaced.

Canadian Coast Guard brought its Hercules aircraft to help with the search, but the thunderstorms and bad weather suspended their efforts, the OPP said in a news release.

Later Saturday around 7:15 p.m., two people were walking along the beach in Long Point Provincial Park when they found the man in the water and brought him to shore. They tried CPR, but were unsuccessful. A coroner pronounced Da Silva dead at the scene.

Cathedral High School's TV channel said Da Silva was a recent student.

It was the second drowning in Lake Erie this weekend.

OPP received a call around 7 p.m. Thursday of a woman in distress near the lake's north shore in Selkirk, Ont.

Police say Tracy Quinlan, 45, of Niagara, Ont., went underwater while swimming with a friend 18 to 30 metres from shore and never resurfaced.

They say that with the help of bystanders, Quinlan was found, brought to shore and given CPR.

She was taken to a local hospital, then air lifted to a Toronto hospital where she later died.
