Chinese President Hu arrives in Vancouver

Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Vancouver Friday on the last leg of his Canadian tour. Hu had made stops in Ottawa, Toronto and Niagara Falls, Ontario. He will attend a lunch hosted by Prime Minister Paul Martin on Saturday.

Hu was greeted by a crowd of about one hundred people when he stepped out of his plane in Vancouver. The crowd waved Chinese and Canadian flags and chanted a welcome greeting in Chinese. Hundreds of supporters and protesters, members of Falun Gong, an order banned in China, lined the road leading to Vancouver's airport.

During the many meetings that Hu has had with federal officials and business leaders during the visit, both Canada and China set a goal of doubling their trade within five years. The trade between Canada and China is currently worth about $30 billion annually.

International Trade Minister Jim Peterson said he wants to change the game of catch-up that Canada is currently playing with the rapidly growing industrial powerhouse that is China.

Canadian officials will travel to China next year to boost trade.

This is Hu's first visit to North America since taking power in China two years ago.
