The program is designed to give high-potential emerging journalists experience in both CBC News' national programming units in Toronto, as well as regional newsrooms across the country.

In May and June, scholars will be placed with a national program or network unit in Toronto, then in July and August, scholars will be placed in a regional station. 

During the application process, candidates can indicate their preference for placements. For those who are selected for the program, CBC will strive to align placements with candidates' top choices. However, due to the competitive nature of the program, we cannot guarantee placement in a preferred unit or location.

About That with Andrew Chang tackles rapid response daily news explainers designed for YouTube and streaming platforms. Working on this team would see a journalism intern hone multiple skills across the board from chase, to research to writing to working in the edit suite and digital delivery. It is a fast-paced, team environment, where we work collaboratively to get this essential content to viewers when they need it most. 

As It Happens

As It Happens is CBC's long-running, award-winning afternoon current affairs program. Every weekday we interview people at the centre of the day's most hard-hitting, heartbreaking and hilarious stories. An internship here is an opportunity to develop chase and writing skills and to work on our podcast and digital treatments. 

Audio news

Welcome to the exciting world of daily network audio news!  2.4 million Canadians tune into us on radio, streaming and podcasts. Work alongside the best audio news producers and reporters in the country as you gain valuable writing, production and editorial skills. 

Day 6

Day 6 with Brent Bambury is a week-in-review radio show that airs on Saturday mornings and presents a fun, surprising and digestible take on the week. It's a great place to intern because we'll give you a chance to pitch, chase, write radio scripts and edit and mix audio and we'll support you as you learn how to do that. 

Digital

The CBC News digital team crafts and packages stories that resonate with audiences across Canada. From breaking news to in-depth features, we create content that reflects the diverse interests, realities, and emotions of Canadians. Our team delivers meaningful, engaging stories for a mobile-first audience, working collaboratively to connect with readers in impactful ways and address the issues that matter most.

Digital radio

The CBC Radio Digital internship gives you the chance to report, adapt, and distribute award-winning radio content to mobile and desktop audiences. You'll learn how to turn compelling audio content into engaging written stories with sharp headlines, collaborating with experienced journalists. You'll also craft and package stories from network radio programs including The Current, As It Happens, White Coat Black Art, The Cost of Living and The Sunday Magazine.

Investigative

The Investigative Unit is a CBC centre of investigative excellence, promoting original, high impact stories on all platforms and examining events through an investigative lens. From finding hidden gems in open source databases to exposing corruption, it is exciting, challenging, rewarding work that allows people to connect with all branches of newsgathering. Interns will be involved in researching, chasing, interviewing, shot-listing, building chronologies and ultimately posting, publishing and broadcasting investigative stories. (Regular daytime hours Monday to Friday.)

Front Burner

CBC's daily news podcast Front Burner is the most listened to Canadian podcast in the country. Every weekday, award-winning investigative journalist Jayme Poisson leads listeners deep into the narratives shaping Canada and the world, leaving the audience more informed, connected and eager to share what they've learned. Interns can be expected to fact-check, pitch stories, chase guests and gather tape.

Newsgathering

If you're interested in general news or beat reporting, the network newsroom is a great place to be. These positions are based in Toronto. You have a chance to work with the general assignment teams or the content units, which specialize in Business, Health, Science, Climate, Entertainment and Education journalism. Everything happens here. We do video, audio and digital reporting, long and short form for cbcnews.ca, the radio and television newscasts and more.

News Network

CBC News Network is Canada's breaking news network. You will get the chance to work in a fast-paced environment that is always changing and where you'll need to be ready to jump on the latest news. CBC NN is a cable TV news network and a streaming powerhouse. We offer great opportunities to pitch, chase, write and learn about what it takes to create breaking news and live event coverage. We have shifts seven days a week, early mornings and evenings.

The Current

The Current is Canada's most listened to morning current affairs program. Monday to Friday we deliver three stories to expand your worldview. Matt Galloway cuts through a sea of choice to bring you stories that transcend the news cycle. Conversations with big thinkers, household names, and people living the news. The Current is a meeting place for diverse perspectives. In its 20 years, The Current has become a go-to place for stories that shape and entertain us. 

The National

The National is the flagship of CBC News, showcasing Canada's best video news storytelling — everywhere you want to watch. Our interns support our team's mission to make news make sense — by pitching, chasing and helping create original video content for all of our platforms (from TV to YouTube to TikTok and beyond). You will get feedback and support from some of the industry's most experienced news video creators.

Social

The CBC News social media internship offers the opportunity to get compelling news stories to younger audiences by producing engaging social videos for platforms like TikTok and YouTube. You'll also work with the CBC News Ask team to spot trends early and understand audience needs directly. This hands-on experience is ideal for journalists who thrive in social spaces and want to learn how to create news stories that resonate in those platforms.

Syndicated audio

Syndicated Audio creates current affairs content for local radio programs from coast-to-coast-to-coast. We're plugged into daily issues that get Canadians talking. On our team, you pitch, chase, write scripts and cut tape. You're relentless in finding the right person with the right perspective to provide analysis to 12 or more shows every day. Your scripts get to the heart of the story quickly. Your actuality evokes emotion. You'll develop skills to use with any deadline-driven team.

July-August placements in regional stations:

British Columbia (Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George or Prince Rupert)

CBC British Columbia is comprised of stations and journalists around the province and the successful candidate for the CBC Vancouver internship will work in a cross-platform collaborative news environment creating journalism for audio, video and text for digital and traditional platforms. You will have the opportunity to research, pitch and develop stories for our current affairs radio programs and our news service. 

Whitehorse

The Yukon was forged around stories whispered, sung, and shared around the circles of campfires. As journalists and as community members, our team of 20 strives to acknowledge the wisdom, struggles and joy that shape the social, political, economic and natural topography of a wondrous territory. Work with us and you'll get a chance to tell and reflect stories that you can't even begin to imagine until you get here. Small, strong, remote, and closely knit. You are welcome!

Yellowknife

Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories, where the CBC North's regional head office is located. The news and current affairs teams here work collaboratively on a wide-range of stories that cover and speak to audiences across the NWT. Our supper-hour TV news program, Northbeat, and our CBC website cover stories from Yukon, NWT, Nunavut, and Nunavik in Northern Quebec.

Edmonton

CBC Edmonton covers Alberta from Red Deer north to the Northwest Territories, with our station in Edmonton and bureaus in Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie. Edmonton is one of Canada's youngest and fastest growing cities, where there is never a shortage of stories to tell. You'll work as a reporter and associate producer, telling stories on radio, digital, social, TV and podcasts. We're a fun, collaborative team and are looking forward to you joining us!

Calgary

CBC Calgary serves southern Alberta - from Red Deer south. We're a vibrant newsroom with six CBC Radio Current Affairs shows, podcasts, and an award winning news team. A summer term working with us would have you spending time with current affairs radio, web and visuals, working with seasoned journalists to start building the foundation for your career.

Saskatchewan (Saskatoon or Regina)

CBC Saskatchewan is an amazing place. We'll help you achieve your career goals, as we help grow your skills in audio, video and text-based storytelling. We'll support you with up-front training, and a strong mentoring team. Before you know it, you will be filing great stories, and getting valuable experience in the CBC ecosystem. You will be based in either Saskatoon or Regina, cities in the midst of dramatic ideological and community change. Join us!

Winnipeg

The candidate will start as an AP in our radio current affairs unit to learn some basics of storytelling, chasing guests and writing greens. They would also learn what makes a good story pitch and how to pitch it. The candidate could also take on reporting tasks based upon their skill and ability. Our goal is to give them a well-rounded experience where they will get a good taste of what journalists do on daily deadlines at CBC.

Toronto

When you join the team at CBC Toronto, you'll have an opportunity to learn the craft of reporting, newsgathering and storytelling in the hectic, challenging, fun and stimulating environment of Canada's largest city. You will have the opportunity to work in a variety of areas depending on your interest - and that could include breaking news, investigative coverage, radio, social, and video.

Ottawa

If you join us at CBC Ottawa this summer, you won't regret it. As one of our scholars, you'll get to dive right into covering a city that has no shortage of news. We're looking to help develop a reporter who's interested in improving their local reporting chops, from covering breaking news to helping our beat reporters at city hall and court. You'll be working Monday to Friday, filing audio, video and text stories. We look forward to hearing from you! 

Quebec (Montreal or Quebec City)

CBC News is at the forefront of local digital and broadcast journalism in Montreal and Quebec. At CBC Montreal, we gather, produce and broadcast news in Quebec for CBC Radio, CBC Television and CBC.CA/Montreal. You will work as a junior member of the CBC News desk team and will learn to gather information, fact check, pitch stories, and take part in the broadcast production of stories. A typical shift is Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET. Must have a working knowledge of French and be comfortable with local pronunciations.

New Brunswick (Fredericton or Saint John)

Are you passionate about local news and current events and learning what matters to people? Join the CBC New Brunswick newsroom and contribute to our journalism, programming and community engagement. Work with our teams to create compelling multi-platform content that sparks meaningful conversations and attracts new audiences. Contribute to organizing events and connecting with people in communities across New Brunswick. Come to N.B. to try it all and hone your skills in a supportive environment.

Halifax

You'll work in news and/or current affairs, pitching and chasing story ideas. You'll conduct interviews in the field and the office, developing contacts and acquiring story knowledge. You'll write and record your own stories for TV, radio and digital or help get other reporters' stories to air and online. In short, you'll make a key contribution to the journalism of CBC News Nova Scotia. 

Charlottetown

CBC P.E.I. based in Charlottetown can provide a unique learning opportunity for the right candidate. If covering local news, engaging with our audience and being a part of a fantastic team appeals to you -- then come join us. Our small, but mighty team creates compelling multi-platform content. Whether you intend to stay on P.E.I. or use this experience as a launching pad for elsewhere in CBC, this will be a fantastic learning experience.

St. John's

Several of the country's top journalists have started their careers at CBC Newfoundland and Labrador. A unique province with character driven stories provides interns with an experience like no other. Newfoundland and Labrador's reputation of kindness and giving extends to the CBC newsroom in the capital city of St. John's.
