Canadians gave over $5 billion to charity in 2000
Statitsics Canada says Canadians gave more than $5 billion to charity in 2001.
Canadians continued to give to charities last year. Collectively they donated $5.5 billion.
Statistics Canada says donations were up from $5.4 billion in 2000.
The agency says the median contribution on tax returns was $200.
About one in four Canadians who filed taxes declared charitable donations.
Nunavut taxpayers had the highest median at $360, followed by Prince Edward Island at $320 and Newfoundland and Labrador at $300.
