Canadian road accidents involving migrant workers
A collision between a flatbed truck and a van that killed 11, including 10 migrant workers, on Feb. 6 in Hampstead, Ont., is the latest road accident in recent years involving temporary migrant agricultural labourers in Canada.

A flatbed truck and passenger van collided near the hamlet of Hampstead, Ont., killing 11 people — most of them migrant workers from Peru — and seriously injuring three others. The crash propelled the van about 30 metres from the intersection. It landed next to a house, while the truck flipped onto its roof. The Peruvians in the van were employed by Brian's Poultry Services, a company that hires out teams of workers to perform various tasks on chicken farms.

Omar Graham, a migrant worker who was a native of Jamaica, died after the pickup truck he was driving flipped off the road near Paris, Ont. The pickup was hauling a trailer packed with tobacco, and Graham was thrown from the vehicle when it rolled.

One worker died and seven others were injured when a minivan carrying migrant agricultural workers flipped on a highway just east of Quebec City. Three of the passengers were thrown from the van.

Three migrant workers died and 14 were injured when the van they were riding in flipped near Abbotsford, B.C.
The RCMP said the van, which was built to carry 10 passengers, had been modified and had the original seats replaced with wooden benches. Not all of the passengers were wearing seatbelts.

In two separate incidents near Leamington, Ont., one migrant worker was killed and another was severely injured after being struck by cars while riding their bikes. Mexican worker Alberto Tableros died from his injuries, while another worker was severely injured.

Two Jamaican farm workers were killed and a third injured after being struck by a car while riding their bikes near Delhi, Ont. William Bell and Desmond McNeil died, while Fred Smith suffered a broken neck and fractured back. The driver of the vehicle was convicted of dangerous driving.
