Wolf manoeuvres through traffic to take down young bighorn on Alberta highway
Calgary woman captures rare event on iPhone of predator chasing prey on Hwy. 40 in Kananaskis
A Calgary woman captured a rare event on video of a wolf taking down a young bighorn sheep on a highway in the Alberta Rockies.
Christine Campbell caught the prey versus predator event on May 27 while driving west on Highway 40 in Kananaskis, just before the entrance to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.
The wolf is seen pursuing a herd of bighorn along the left shoulder. It then forces a small sheep to cross the highway.
"I was thinking it's kind of strange for them to be running. And then, right as I was thinking that the wolf just jutted out to the side."
As it chases its prey across the highway, the wolf narrowly misses a vehicle. After taking down its kill on the side of the road it drags it up a hill into the forest.
Campbell said she felt "sad" for the sheep, but didn't interfere.
"The wolf needs to eat too and maybe he had wolf cubs to feed."
