Malfunction shuts down 3 of 4 Winsport rinks
Closures add pressure to Calgary's ice shortage
Crews at Winsport in Calgary are working to restore some ice after the facility was forced to shut down three of its four rinks earlier this week.
The rinks are located at Canada Olympic Park and the closures are a huge challenge because of a lack of ice time in Calgary.
Perry Cavanagh is the general manager of the Don Hartman Northeast Sportsplex and said the ice-making process is extremely sophisticated.
"It's something that all of the operators take pride in with respect to, you know, building up a really nice sheet of ice for the kids and the adults to play on," he said.
"I really feel sorry for the folks there and we'll certainly be extending the resources we have if they're in need of additional support."
The problem at Winsport is a malfunctioning chiller, which cools the liquid pumped through pipes to maintain the ice surface, and the organization said it's working to fix it as soon as possible.
