Mozart, National Geographic, beer and retro arcade games this weekend in Calgary
Family fun from the farm to the opera, plus some award-winning photography and a film festival
It's that time again — time to put the worries and troubles of your week aside and start planning your weekend.
These are five things you won't want to miss, as highlighted by the Homestretch's Tracy Fuller.
1. Aleberta: Our Beer History
This three-part documentary series explores the 130-year history of brewing in Alberta, from the influence of government policy to the passionate entrepreneurs themselves.
A Q&A will take place at the screening with local producer, director and editor Spencer Estabrooks. Don't miss the afterparty in the basement of National Beer hall on 10th Avenue.
When: Thursday at the Globe Cinema. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., screening begins at 7:00 p.m.
2. This is My City Festival
This two-and-a-half-week long festival showcases the work of some of Calgary's most marginalized citizens — the homeless, those at risk of homelessness and others who have dedicated themselves to developing and expressing their creative talents in positive ways through ongoing art programs and workshops.
Exhibits, films, storytelling events, music, theatre and workshops are all in the lineup.
When: Now through April 24, see the full schedule for details
3. Aggie Days
Cow milking, sheep shearing, sheep-herding dog trials, an extreme cowboy race, livestock auctioneering, the amazing corn maze, and much more!
It's family fun with all the farm animals you can imagine, from huge draft horses to tiny chicks that are just a few days old.
The CBC's own Angela Knight will be there too.
When: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Stampede Park
4. The Magic Flute
The Calgary Opera Company's final production of the 2015-2016 season is ending with Mozart's blockbuster production, The Magic Flute, featuring one of the world's most famous arias, The Queen of the Night.
The company will also host a "Taste of the Opera" event — an hour of conversation with expert panelists followed by a tasting event with wine and "nibblies" that have been selected in the vein of the opera itself.
When: "Taste of Mozart's Magic Flute" happens Friday at the Mamdani Opera Centre at 7 p.m. Show runs until April 22. See full schedule for details.
4. Calgary Underground Film Festival
The week-long showcase is back for its 13th year, featuring local, national and international independent films and the return of the Cuffcade.
They're breaking out the old school video arcade consoles and programming them with brand new video games produced by local Calgary game designers.
When: April 10 through 17. See the full schedule here.
5. National Geographic Live
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but Carsten Peter's photography will leave you speechless.
