Police said the 21-month-old girl was taken off life support Friday night.

The girl was found unconscious and not breathing at a day home in McKenzie Towne Wednesday afternoon.

Police were originally told the young girl had fallen down stairs. She was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Neighbours of the day home operator said she had one child of her own and was caring for three others.

Police say the homicide unit is now investigating and an autopsy is set for early next week. They are not releasing the name of the girl.

Duty Insp. Darren Leggatt says investigations like this are difficult, even for seasoned officers.

"These events are certainly tragic, as with most of you, most of us have young children and events of this nature typically impact us as well," he said.
