Police are investigating a fatal crash on Shaganappi Trail in northwest Calgary that happened early Tuesday morning.

A northbound SUV travelling well in excess of 100 km/h slammed into the back of a street sweeper at about 3 a.m. MT, police said.

The driver, believed to be a man in his 30s, was killed instantly while the operator of the street sweeper suffered minor injuries.

"Without question speed was a serious factor here," said traffic unit Sgt. Mike ter Kuile. "The rear of the street sweeper has essentially been taken off."

Police had temporarily shut down Shaganappi Trail in both directions between John Laurie Boulevard and Edgemont Boulevard N.W. while the traffic unit investigates.
