An Ottawa-based justice group says Canada should extradite an accused Guatemalan war criminal to Spain or go ahead and prosecute him here.

Jorge Sosa, 53, seen in a karate demonstration, is wanted in Guatemala on war crimes charges, in Spain for crimes against humanity for his actions in Guatemala and in the U.S for allegedly making a false statement relating to his citizenship application. (YouTube)
Jorge Vinicio Orantes Sosa is currently in custody in Calgary and faces extradition back to the United States on immigration charges.

Sosa, 53, is also wanted by Guatemalan authorities for allegedly participating in attacks on a village in 1982 in which 251 men, women and children were massacred.

Now a Spanish judge has issued an international arrest warrant for Sosa, who has both Canadian and U.S. citizenship, for crimes against humanity.

Matt Eisenbrandt of the Canadian Centre for International Justice says Canada should choose the extradition request from Spain as it involves more serious charges.

He says the federal government should also consider prosecuting Sosa in Canada.
