Calgary police have charged a second suspect in connection with a fatal shooting in the community of Sandstone on Aug. 28.

Gerald Benn, 23, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

On Aug. 28, police were called to the northwest community of Sandstone after reports of shots fired.

Abas Ahmed Ibrahim, 27, and Mohamed Khalid Shaikh, 19, were killed, while a youth who was shot was rushed to hospital.

On Aug. 31, police charged Dennis Wong, 20, with two counts of accessory after the fact to murder, and one count of being party to the offence of attempted murder.

"We want to thank the media and the public for their help in furthering this investigation," said Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the homicide unit in a release.

"It can often take months to lay charges in shooting investigations, which is why receiving information from the public is critical. Sometimes even the smallest piece of information is the key to furthering an investigation."

Police appealed to the public for assistance after they suspected the shooting was targeted.

Benn is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21.
