City inspectors and the Calgary Fire Department are examining the outside of the Fairmont Palliser Hotel after pieces of sandstone were found on a nearby sidewalk.

The two palm-sized fragments were located on First Street S.W.

It is unclear at this point whether the debris fell off the building in downtown Calgary.

"At this point we have to assume it did, but there was no witness," said Jaqueline Tyler, a communications manager with Fairmont Palliser.

The fire department says no one was injured.

Traffic was rerouted between Ninth and 10th avenues S.W. while officials investigated.
