The co-founder of Tim Hortons is donating $2 million to the Canadian Red Cross towards its work helping the people of Fort McMurray.

The gift from Calgary-based billionaire Ron Joyce and his family is the largest personal donation to the cause so far, the Red Cross said in a release on Friday.

"The needs are great and this very generous donation from the Joyce family will help support individuals, families and communities as they work to rebuild their lives," said Conrad Sauve, president and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross.

The massive wildfire that swept through Fort McMurray last week destroyed an estimated 2,432 houses and buildings and forced more than 80,000 people to flee their homes.

"It is part of our Canadian culture to look after one another during times of need," Joyce said.

"This tragedy really exemplifies the solidarity of our nation and we are privileged to be in the position to assist in the relief efforts."

More than 700 Red Cross personnel are working on the relief effort,  helping with evacuee registration, family re-unification and organizing accommodations, food, water and basic supplies, the organization says.

The Canadian Red Cross is providing emergency funds of $600 per adult and $300 per child to the people displaced by the disaster.
