Former astronaut Robert Thirsk began his new role as chancellor of the University of Calgary on Monday.

The university’s senate unanimously elected Thirsk to the position in May for a four-year term.

As the school's 13th chancellor, he will preside over convocation ceremonies, confer degrees and chair the university’s senate.

Thirsk graduated from the U of C in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

He completed a doctorate in medicine at McGill University in 1982 and joined the Canadian Astronaut Program the following year.

During his career, Thirsk spent more time in orbit than any other Canadian.

Thirsk replaces Jim Dinning as chancellor.
