Remembrance Day 2016 in Calgary: What's open, what's closed and where to pay your respects

There are lots of options for Calgarians to show their respects on Remembrance Day, and plenty of things to do with the rest of the day — but not everything is open.

There are lots of options for Calgarians to show their respects on Remembrance Day, and plenty of things to do with the rest of the day.

Here's a list of several events on Nov. 11, followed by some information on what will be open and closed on Friday. 

Military Museums

10:30 a.m. | 4520 Crowchild Trail S.W.

There is no charge to attend, but the Veterans' Food Bank is collecting non-perishable food donations.

Jubilee Auditorium

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. | 1415 14th Ave. N.W.

Tickets are free and issued at the door but veterans and seniors are given priority. Ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.

The Hangar Flight Museum (formerly called the Aerospace Museum)

10:20 a.m. | 4629 McCall Way N.E.

It's recommended people arrive before 10:15 a.m. to get a good seat.

Battalion Park

10:30 a.m. | 3001 Signal Hill Dr. S.W.

Hosted by the King's Own Calgary Regiment.

Calgary International Airport

10:30 a.m. | 2000 Airport Rd. N.E.

Airport Pipe Band and Honour Guard will form up in the main terminal, concourse D, departures level.

Canadian Pacific Ogden Memorial

10:40 a.m. | CP Memorial Square

CP pays tribute to the more than 33,000 employees who served in the two world wars. Enter at the top parking lot by the 69th Avenue and Ogden Dale Road S.E. entrance.

Central Memorial Park

10:30 a.m. | 1221 2nd St. S.W.

Ceremony is followed by a parade with the Calgary Highlanders.

Chinook Centre

11:00 a.m. | 6455 Macleod Tr. S.W.

Five buglers will perform the "Last Post" at the Centre Court before a moment of silence.

Field of Crosses

10:30 a.m. | 200 Memorial Dr. N.W.

More than 3,000 white crosses honour fallen southern Alberta soldiers. The project is now in its eighth year.

Fort Calgary

10:30 a.m. | 750 9th Ave. S.E.

The ceremony is followed by an artisan's fair from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kerby Centre

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. | 1133 7th Ave. S.W.

Service begins at 10:50 a.m.

Poppy Plaza

Daily | 1101 Memorial Dr. N.W.

The park commemorates veterans, daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Burnsland Cemetery

2 p.m. | Cemetery Road and Spiller Road. S.E.

The cemetery — where many military and RCMP are laid to rest — offers a free walking tour at 2 p.m. Non-Canadian units are part of the history showcased in the Burnsland Field of Honour.

Moving around the city

Flags at all government buildings will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sundown on Friday.

Calgary Transit will operate on a Saturday-service level and it's free for all veterans and their family members. Veterans must be in uniform or have a veteran identification card to be eligible.

On-street parking is no change with holiday rates at select Calgary Parking Authority surface lots and parkades.

Parking is free for veterans with a valid veteran's licence plate at all Calgary Parking Authority facilities except the Calgary Zoo and Telus Spark lots.

Garbage collection is business as usual.

Later in the day

Swim, gym or skate at the Village Square and Southland Leisure Centres between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. with regular admission rates.

There's plenty of free skating between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at Ernie Starr Arena, Optimist and George Blundun Arenas, Rose Kohn/Jimmie Condon Arenas, Shouldice Arena, Stew Hendry/Henry Viney Arenas and Stu Peppard Arena.

If you would prefer swimming some laps, they are free at Bob Bahan Aquatic & Fitness Centre, Glenmore Aquatic Centre, Sir Winston Churchill Aquatic & Recreation Centre and Thornhill Aquatic & Recreation Centre between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and again between 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What is not open?

All city pools and arenas (aside from those listed above), all athletic parks and the Calgary Soccer Centre (unless you have an advance booking), all city golf courses, city hall and administration buildings, North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Arts Centres, the Nature Centre at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and the Animal Services Centre.
