Recycling carts to arrive at Calgary homes

The city will start delivering blue recycling carts to Calgary homes in the next few weeks.

The city will start delivering blue recycling carts to Calgary homes in the next few weeks.

Starting this spring, city crews will be picking up recycling at about 300,000 homes, as well as complexes with as many as four units.

"Residents will receive their blue cart at the front of their homes two to six weeks before their first recycling pickup," a city statement said. "Detailed instructions on how to use the program and what can be recycled will be attached to the lid of each cart."

Information on the program is also available on the city's website. Residents won't have to sort the recyclables, which will include most plastics, and will leave the carts out next to the garbage on their regular garbage day.

An extra $8 for the service will be added to every household's Enmax utility bill.

Recycling will start on the following dates :

  • Southwest April 21-24.
  • Southeast  May 12-15.
  • Northwest June 9-12.
  • Northeast June 30-July 3.

People who live in larger apartment or condominium buildings will have to continue to use community recycling depots, which will accept plastics and will no longer require sorting.
