Traffic has resumed on Highway 8 west of Calgary after a multi-vehicle collision Tuesday night that left one person dead and sent two people to hospital.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Cochrane RCMP, EMS and fire services from Redwood Meadows and Rocky View County responded to a 911 call, Mounties said.

Two trucks and an SUV collided on Highway 8, approximately 500 metres east of the Highway 22 traffic circle. That's about 20 kilometres west of Calgary city limits.

RCMP said its preliminary investigation indicates that the SUV was travelling west on Highway 8 when the driver hit the brakes and slid on ice into oncoming traffic, where the vehicle hit a heavy-duty pick-up truck.

The SUV spun back into the westbound lane where it struck another pick-up truck that had been traveling westbound behind it.

The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries, while the 72-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, RCMP said. Both were from Cochrane, Alta.

For several hours, Highway 8 east of the Highway 22 traffic circle was blocked and traffic was being diverted while the collision was investigated, but has now been cleared.

RCMP said that no further updates are anticipated.
