A RCMP officer shot a Calgary woman Sunday after she was allegedly involved in a struggle with the officer east of the city following a chase.

According to an RCMP news release, the shooting happened near the intersection of Highway 564 and Range Road 245, about 17 kilometres northeast of Strathmore.

An officer tried to arrest the woman and "an altercation occurred," the release states. The officer shot the woman multiple times. She was the only person in the vehicle.

Emergency crews brought the woman, 37, to a Calgary hospital for treatment. No word was given as to her condition.

The officer was unharmed.

Per the release, Calgary police called Airdrie Rural RCMP around 2:15 p.m. asking for assistance finding a vehicle that had been driving erratically.

An RCMP officer located the vehicle and attempted to stop the driver, the release states. However, the vehicle sped off, although it was followed by a Calgary police helicopter.

The woman allegedly continued to drive erratically, at times swerving into oncoming lanes. Officers used a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, the province's police watchdog, is investigating the shooting.
