STORY UPDATE: On Nov. 14, 2024, an Alberta Serious Incident Response Team report concluded that the responding police officers acted reasonably in shooting the suspect because they had good reason to think he was going to attack them. "When they arrived at the residence, the AP [affected person] ran directly at them while carrying a 135-cm shovel. They responded by firing their handguns at him, striking him once," the report said.

Officers were called to the 12100 block of Coventry Hills Way N.E. at 9:45 p.m. after a resident reported that an unknown man with a weapon was in their backyard and trying to get into the house, the Calgary Police Service said in a release.

The family took shelter inside the house as they waited for police to arrive.

"Upon arrival, officers encountered the man and despite de-escalation efforts, two officers discharged their service weapons," police said.

The man was taken to hospital in non-life threatening condition.

The police officers were not injured.
