Police officer shot in northeast Calgary, one suspect dead and another in custody
The suspects were previously involved in other firearms-related offences
A Calgary police officer has been shot in the northeast community of Falconridge.
In a media availability on Wednesday evening, Calgary Police Service (CPS) deputy acting Chief Cliff O'Brien said the officer is in stable condition and has been released from hospital.
One suspect was also shot. He was declared deceased at the hospital. Another suspect has been taken into custody.
O'Brien said the shooting occurred in a parking lot at 5220 Falsbridge Dr. N.E. on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., as police were executing a high-risk warrant.
"While attempting to arrest an individual, gunfire was exchanged, resulting in one police officer and one suspect being shot," O'Brien said.
O'Brien said the suspects were previously involved in other firearms-related offences, which is why the CPS tactical unit was present during the incident.
While O'Brien said there were multiple civilians who witnessed the shooting, no threat to public safety remains.
He added that multiple police officers from different units also witnessed the events.
"There were many witnesses to this brazen and unsettling incident ... it's an emotional day."
O'Brien said he is confident that the suspect police have in custody will face charges.
CPS are not releasing the name of the officer who was shot, or what unit he was a member of, but said that he had served on the force for 11 years.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate.
