Former CBC Calgary anchor Nirmala Naidoo is looking to make a the leap into politics.

She announced her intention today to seek the Liberal Party's nomination in Calgary Rocky Ridge.

The new federal riding is located in the city's northwest and replaces parts of Calgary-West and Calgary Nose Hill, which are ridings currently held by Conservative MPs Diane Ablonczy and Rob Anders.

“For years Calgarians have trusted me with telling their stories but I felt the frustration of not being able to influence the direction of that story," she said in a release.

"I have listened to the stories of Calgarians and now I want to bring those voices to Ottawa.”

Naidoo has been in broadcasting for the past 19 years.

She says her family has always held Liberal values. Naidoo's sister is a member of the Ontario legislature.

“My family moved to Canada to escape apartheid in South Africa in the 1960s," she said.

"We came here, like most immigrants, because of Canada’s open and accepting progressive policies and values. I am committed to promoting those values, and I believe my voice will be best heard through the Liberal Party of Canada.”
