Metal detectors are being installed in the next phase of enhanced security measures being implemented at the Saddledome in Calgary.

Prohibited items

  • Backpacks, large bags or luggage (too big to fit under a seat with no obstructions).
  • Any and all weapon like devices.
  • Aerosol cans.
  • Mechanically-enhanced noise making devices.
  • Large chains, spiked jewelry.
  • Explosives, fireworks, sparklers, glow sticks, laser pens.
  • Food and beverages.
  • Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs.
  • Laptops.

The installation is still underway, but is expected to be completed over the next month.

"These measures are consistent with those in effect at other NHL venues and most large public assembly venues throughout North America," said the Saddedome in handout to be given out before tonight's game against the Los Angeles Kings.

Officials say all guests and their belongings may be searched upon entry into the venue.

“Security screening includes walk through metal detectors, hand-held metal-detecting wands and bag searches," said the Saddledome.

"By tendering a ticket and entering the venue, guests consent to such searches."

Flames fan Brad Markin said he's not too bothered by the new measures. "A little more security, but just like the schools, a little bit of overkill," he said.

Gena Roberts, a fan from the United States, said down south the metal detectors are commonplace. "There's always a first time. So don't knock it. Unless you're carrying guns and knives on you," she said.

Officials have also released a list of prohibited items to help expedite entry for Flames fans.

Prohibited items discovered during the search must be returned to the owner’s vehicle or discarded

Unlawful items will be confiscated.

Saddledome officials encouraged people to walk through the new metal detectors even though they are not activated yet. (CBC)
