Commuters on Memorial Drive will navigate through a new lane reversal system at Edmonton Trail and Fourth Street N.E., starting Monday.

The changes should reduce delays in the area along Memorial Drive by 30 per cent, according to a city news release.

From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on weekdays — excluding holidays — there will be two left turn lanes from westbound Memorial Drive, allowing drivers to head southbound onto the Langevin Bridge into the downtown.

The rest of the time, there will be two left turn lanes from eastbound Memorial Drive, allowing drivers to head northbound on Edmonton Trail N.E.

Only the centre lane will be reversible, which is part of several changes to the street and intersections meant to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, according to the city.

The changes include reducing the speed limit in the area from 70 to 50 km/h.

The city created a YouTube video to explain the project and the changes.
