One man is dead following an early morning shooting Wednesday in the northeast section of Calgary, police said.

It happened just before 7 a.m. in the 8400 block of Saddleridge Drive. Calgary Police Service officers have cordoned off the area.

Residents who heard gunshots and saw a man lying on the front lawn of a home called the police to the area, police said in a release.

When officers arrived, they found a man about 20 years old with possible gunshot wounds. The young man died on the scene. Officers evacuated the home to make sure everyone was safe.

Police are questioning two young men about the shooting in the quiet, middle-class neighbourhood. A car with bullet holes in the front windshield is on the street nearby.

A woman who arrived on the scene became visibly distraught, and began hysterically shouting; "My son, my son." Officers led her away from the scene.

This is the second homicide in the city this week. On Monday, Efrem Mehari Kuflom, 30, of Calgary, was shot and killed near a Tim Hortons coffee shop in the city’s southwest.

Kuflom was driving his car in an alleyway on 12th Avenue at 11th Street S.W. when a man on foot pulled out a gun and shot him.

Police said Tuesday that Kuflom, originally from Eritrea, was known to police. They described the killing as drug-related. They are still searching for a suspect in that case.

Police Insp. Kevin Forsen said Tuesday that investigators  have been able to obtain a lot of video surveillance taken in the area of the shooting, and they hope to soon have a detailed description of the suspect.
