One man was wounded in a shooting in southeast Calgary Sunday night.

At about 7 p.m., officers responded to reports of gunshots in the 5500 block of Eighth Avenue S.E., police said in a Sunday news release.

Witness saw two vehicles exchanging gunfire in the Penbrooke Meadows neighbourhood, police said.

At the scene, police found a vehicle they believe to be involved in the incident and a man suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The man was taken to hospital in stable condition.

A second vehicle involved in the shooting left the scene before officers arrived, police said.

Police believe the shooting was not a random incident, though the investigation is in early stages.

Earlier Sunday morning, a man was shot and killed at a restaurant on 17th Avenue S.E. in Radisson Heights.

Last week, Calgary police said gun violence is on the rise this year in the city, but the majority of these incidents aren't tied to organized crime.

Anyone who witnessed the incident on Sunday is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
