An unidentified man is dead after being hit by the C-Train in northeast Calgary just after it left the Marlborough Station on Monday morning.

Police said a witness told them the man, believed to be in his early 20s, seemed to "just freeze" as he was crossing the tracks when he saw the train coming toward him.

The traffic arm was activiated at the time with flashing lights and bells, said police. Traffic investigators confirmed through an accident reconstruction that the man was in a marked crosswalk.

The young man was not carrying any identification, police said. They are hoping someone will come forward to help them identify him.

Traffic was rerouted while police dealt with the accident and the train stopped running.

The accident happened near the intersection of 36th Street and 12th Avenue N.E., across from the Pacific Place Mall.
