A woman walking near Prince's Island Park early Sunday morning had to fight off a knife-wielding attacker and escape on foot, say police, who are now investigating the incident.

Investigators say a woman was walking from the park along the Bow River pathway around 3:30 a.m. when she was grabbed from behind by an unidentified person.

Police say the attacker was holding a knife and attempted to drag the woman toward the river. The woman fought back and managed to get away, and reached a nearby security guard who called police.

Officers are gathering CCTV footage and will release a suspect description once it becomes available. The gender of the suspect has not been confirmed.

"All Calgarians should be able to move around our city any time of the day, in any location without fear of harm. Those who seek to cause harm and fear will be found and held accountable for their actions," said violent crimes investigative team Sergeant Matt Hinchey in a press release.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police non-emergency number at 403-266-1234, or reach out to Crime Stoppers.
