Key moments in the Dustin Paxton trial

The allegation that Dustin Paxton brutally beat and mutilated his roommate first came to light almost two years ago when the man turned up — disfigured and emaciated — at a Regina hospital.
Paxton, 32, was arrested in August 2010 in Edmonton and charged with aggravated assault, forcible confinement and sexual assault in connection with the long-running series of attacks in Regina and Calgary on his one-time business partner.
The alleged victim cannot be identified because of a publication ban.
A trial in Calgary lasted for over nine weeks, with testimony from dozens of witnesses, including the alleged victim.
As the criminal case wound up last December, the defence team asked the judge for a stay of proceedings, arguing that Paxton did not get a fair trial.
