Jim Dinning not interested in PC leadership race
It's time for new blood, says former leadership candidate
Former Alberta treasurer and one-time Tory leadership candidate Jim Dinning says he won't be in the running to replace Alison Redford.
- Alison Redford's replacement will have to heal party divisions
- Alberta PCs to stick to current rules to elect new leader
- Ken Hughes to 'listen' before running for Alberta PC leader
Dinning tweeted a link to a piece he wrote for the Calgary Herald in which he says his political "best-before" date has passed.
He says he remains an ardent Progressive Conservative but it's time for new blood.
Dinning was treasurer between 1992 and 1997 under then-premier Ralph Klein.
The Calgary-based Dinning ran in the 2006 Tory leadership race won by Ed Stelmach.
Nomination call to open soon
The party is expected to officially open the call for nominations for the current race sometime this week.
Senator Scott Tannas, who is from High River, said in late March he is not interested in the job either.
"I was asked by a group of senior party members to give serious consideration to the prospect of seeking the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta," he said in a release.
"After personal reflection, I know that at this time I do not possess all of the above ingredients in sufficient measure to be the leader Albertans need and deserve."
Gary Mar, a frontrunner in the last leadership race before being overtaken by Redford, will also not be seeking the position. He is currently Alberta’s representative in Asia.
