It's a girl! Baby gorilla in good health at Calgary Zoo
The latest addition to the Calgary Zoo, a newborn gorilla, is a girl, officials announced Tuesday.
The baby western lowland gorilla also continues to be in good health, the zoo said in a release.
The gorilla was born to mother Zuri and father, silverback Kakinga, at about 3 a.m. MT on May 15. The gorilla team said they are optimistic the newborn will do well.
In 2006, Zuri gave birth to a female that died when it was 12 days old after a more dominant female gorilla took away the baby, but was not producing milk and could not nurse it. The zoo tried to sustain the baby gorilla with supplemental feedings, but was not successful.
No decision has been made about how the baby's name will be chosen, the zoo said.
The zoo said the TransAlta Rainforest building will remain closed for a few more days to provide a chance for mother and daughter to bond and rest.
The announcement of the gorilla's sex comes after a rough week and a half at the zoo, where officials continue to investigate the puzzling deaths of 41 stingrays. A senior elephant keeper is also recovering after he was injured Sunday by one of the pachyderms.
