Man in his 30s found in medical distress alone in a cell Tuesday
An inmate at the Calgary Correctional Centre died in a cell alone on Tuesday, a spokesperson with Alberta Justice confirmed to CBC News.
Michelle Davio said in an email the inmate was found in medical distress.
"Emergency medical services were provided, however the individual passed away," Davio said.
Paramedics said the inmate was a man in his mid 30s.
Stuart Brideaux of EMS said the medical examiner will have to determine the cause of death, but a media report attributing the death to a fentanyl overdose cannot be confirmed until further investigation.
Davio said an internal investigation has been launched, the Calgary police are involved and a "fatality inquiry is anticipated."
