Where to find Calgary's coolest ice cream
These 6 places sell unconventional flavours and elaborate constructions
With a historic heat wave still gripping Calgary for days to come, here are six of the coolest ice cream shops in the city that feature everything from unique flavours to crazy cones.
Uzu Taiyaki
If you're out for a walk along the Bow River near Chinatown, stop by Uzu Taiyaki on Second Avenue S.E. The store sells Asian-inspired flavours of soft serve ice cream in cones that are shaped like fish. This month's feature flavours are brown sugar milk tea and winter melon tea.
Astronaut Ice Cream
A new ice cream shop and cafe at the Telus Spark Science Centre has nine different soft serve cones, each designed after a planet — as well as Pluto. Unique features on each cone mimic their planetary counterparts, like a doughnut for Saturn's rings and a cake pop for Earth's moon.
Astronaut Ice Cream is accessible to the public without having to buy a ticket to Telus Spark.
Tokyo Street Market and Tokyo Station
If you haven't had enough of the heat yet, add a little spice to a cool treat. Tokyo Street Market on Centre Street and Tokyo Station on 15th Avenue S.W. sell wasabi gelato. Their other flavours include blueberry, mango and vanilla/matcha swirl soft serve.
Canelo's Ice Cream
Mexican-inspired creations at Canelo's Ice Cream include "tacos" and "nachos" — waffle taco shells and waffle chips topped with piles of ice cream. The shop, located on 26th Avenue S.W., also sells 24 flavours of vegan soft serve.
Sweet Tooth
Sweet Tooth's Thai-inspired rolled ice cream is a work of art. The Chinatown shop's decadent monthly feature, summer marmalade, includes mango chunks, cheesecake, whipped cream and lemon biscotti.
Lukes Drug Mart
Lukes Drug Mart, with locations in Bridgeland and Killarney, sells soft serve ice cream. The current featured flavour is a refreshing coconut lime and milk+ (a vanilla-like flavour) twist. On July 1, 100 per cent of sales will go to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.
