Homicide unit investigating northeast shooting
2 other homes were also hit by gunfire within minutes, police say
The homicide unit is investigating after a man was killed in a northeast shooting Saturday morning.
Police say they received a report at 9:49 a.m. MT that a man had been shot in the 300 block of Manora Road N.E. The man was in critical condition when emergency crews arrived to transport him to hospital and died en route.
The house where police found the man in medical distress has security cameras set up in the front and back of the home. Neighbours say the couple that lives there had only moved in about a month or two ago.
Mike Eldessoui, who lives nearby, heard the shots.
“I was talking to my wife inside, we had our grandson with us and … we thought it was fireworks to begin with,” Eldessoui said. “Then all of a sudden we saw all the sirens and heard all the sirens and saw all the police cars around the block.”
Minutes later, police say shots were fired at two homes in the 5700 block of Maidstone Cres. N.E. Police say one bullet hit the outside of a house.
In the other house, an eight-year-old boy was playing on the sofa when a bullet came through the window. The man’s father said the bullet missed the boy’s head by about a foot.
Calgary police staff Sgt. Rob Davidson said that anytime a firearm is discharged in the city there is a public safety concern.
“That bullet has to go somewhere,” Davidson said. “We’re talking about discharging of a firearm in a residential area. We expect people to be home, we expect people to be enjoying their yards.”
No injuries were reported but because at least one firearm was involved in the residential shootings, the gang unit is investigating.
It's not clear at this time whether the shooting death and the residence shootings are connected. Police say they do not have a suspect. The homicide unit is expected to provide an update on Sunday.
