Calgary police are warning the public about a man described as a high-risk sexual offender who has been released from prison.

Shaun Gerard Desruisseaux, 43,  was released Thursday into the Calgary area on statutory release, after serving two-thirds of a 15-year sentence for a series of sexual assaults on strangers, police said in a release.

Desruisseaux was convicted of criminal offences between 2008 to 2011 in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan.

He targeted women and a teenager who were unknown to him.

Police said the decision to issue a warning about Desruisseaux's release was made after concluding it was in the public interest.

"Members of the public are advised that the intent of the process is to enable members of the public to take suitable precautionary measures and not to embark on any form of vigilante action," police said.

Under the conditions of his release, he will be supervised by Correctional Services Canada in co-operation with Calgary police as necessary.

Desruisseaux is five feet 11 inches, 235 pounds and has hazel eyes and greying brown hair.
