A Calgary council committee voted unanimously Wednesday to go ahead with a composting pilot project.

Green bins — about half the size of the blue and black ones — will be distributed to about 7,500 homes in four as yet unnamed communities.

The project will get underway next year, the city’s utilities and environmental protection committee decided.

After one year officials will evaluate how well the new service worked.

If the green bin project is a success, Calgary could have a city-wide system in place by 2015, officials said.
