Trish Exton-Parder of the Zoo says the animal care team is observing the troop "to watch for signs of nursing and bonding between the mom and baby."
She says the zoo will release pictures of the baby on Friday. There are no other details yet.
Kioja was raised by humans and the zoo wasn't sure if she would be able to look after a newborn.
Zookeepers have been working with her, practicing with a stuffed animal called Chucky.
This is the first gorilla birth at the zoo since Yewande in 2008.
The TransAlta Rainforest building will remain closed for the day.
