More than 25 firefighters worked to put out a fire that damaged four homes in Calgary's southeast.

There were 13 people in the four houses damaged by the fire. Residents and neighbours had already evacuated when fire crews arrived and everyone was accounted for.

Four people were evaluated by EMS, and three of them were sent to the hospital because of smoke inhalation.

More than 25 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control using large volume hose lines and an aerial ladder.

The Calgary Police Service was also on site, as well as ATCO and Enmax .

The fire department said icy roads and cars in the area driving to the scene made it challenging for crews to enter.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and some crews remained overnight.
