A resident of a Calgary seniors' home has been charged with arson in an early morning fire that left another resident in life-threatening condition.

Officers were called to Wentworth Manor in Christie Park at 5717 14th Avenue S.W. at about 1:25 a.m. where firefighters had already contained the fire, police said.

A man in his 80s was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The Calgary police arson and homicide units worked together with a Calgary Fire Department investigator and have charged another resident of the home, a man in his 70s, with arson.

That man suffers from a mental health condition and, as such, his name won't be released, police said in a release Monday afternoon.

"This is an extremely sad case," said Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service.

"We believe that the offender was suffering from a significant cognitive impairment at the time of the incident and we are continuing to support all of the families involved."
