A fire at a Lethbridge apartment complex that spread from the second floor to the roof Friday has displaced every resident in the building.

Four fire stations responded to the blaze at West Highlands Boulevard shortly before 8 a.m.

The flames were fully extinguished shortly after 10 a.m. but all 36 units were affected, said a release.

One firefighter was taken to hospital for precautionary measures but is in stable condition.

Crews say the fire started on a second floor balcony, then spread to the third floor and attic of the apartment complex.

Residents were safely evacuated from the building but are now unable to return after the heavy fire, smoke and water damage.

The City of Lethbridge, along with Alberta Health Services and Canadian Red Cross, arranged medical needs, transportation and lodging for residents on scene. Anyone who left immediately after evacuation can receive support through the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but anyone with information or who may have early videos of the fire is asked to contact the Lethbridge Fire Prevention Bureau at 403-320-3811 or fireprevention@lethbridge.ca.
