Firefighter suffers minor hand injury after gas tanks cause several small explosions
Several small explosions happened during an overnight fire at an auto recycling depot that destroyed two buildings and numerous cars.
A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury while battling the blaze.
Firefighters were called to the business, located in an industrial park at 28th St. and Fifth Ave. N.E., around 1 a.m. on Thursday. Because the fire was spreading quickly, a second alarm was called to bring in more firefighters and equipment.
Damage to the two buildings is substantial, but adjacent businesses were not damaged. Firefighters remained at the scene after the fire was doused to deal with hot spots.
The fire is considered suspicious and the arson unit has been called in to investigate.
