Fatal party shooting leaves neighbours worried
Calgary police are hunting for someone who shot and killed one man and wounded four people Sunday morning after a wedding reception at a community centre.
Callers told police they heard shots at about 3:20 a.m. Many people were fleeing a large party when police arrived at the Albert Park Radisson Heights Community Centre.
Family described Abdalla Hussein, 20, of Calgary, as the man killed in the shooting.
On Monday, police confirmed that two of the five victims were targeted, while the others were caught in the crossfire.
Eduardo Gonzalez, who runs a daycare centre across the street, described the neighbourhood in southeast Calgary as rough. His daycare has been broken into before and he has witnessed several fights.
"I am not surprised by the shooting. I am surprised by the killing," he said.
Fortunately, the shooting happened in the early morning when none of the 54 children were at the daycare, he said.
"Now it's getting scary … for the safety of the kids. You never know, a bullet coming across and hit somebody innocent, right?"
Detectives from the homicide, gang and organized crime units are working with officers from the district, police said in a release. There have been no arrests and the victims have not been identified by police.
Booked for small wedding reception
Peter Nugent, president of the community association, said a woman booked the hall for a wedding reception with an expected crowd of 24. When the association's secretary left the event at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the party was tame.
But when the shooting happened at 3:20 a.m. Sunday, officials said, there were hundreds of people and two DJs performing, including a man who goes by the name DJ Glenn.
"People were screaming,'' the DJ said. "You hear shots, you're going to scream .… I just tried to cover myself, hide."
Emergency medics declared a man dead at the scene.
