Child killed, 4 others hospitalized after 3-vehicle crash in southeastern Alberta
Family's SUV hit from behind by semi, after it stopped behind another semi that had stopped for construction
An 11-year-old was killed and four members of his family were hospitalized after a three-vehicle collision west of Oyen, Alta., on Wednesday afternoon, according to the RCMP.
Police, firefighters, EMS and Stars air ambulance responded to Highway 9 northwest of the town at Range Road 60 at 4:30 p.m. for a collision involving two semis and an SUV.
Police said one of the semis had stopped for construction and the SUV stopped behind it when a second semi hit the SUV.
A boy who was travelling in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene and four members of his family — two adults and two children — were taken to hospital. One of them, the driver, has since been released but the remaining three are still in serious condition, police said Thursday.
Both semi drivers were uninjured.
The highway was closed until just before midnight, but the investigation continued Thursday afternoon.
The Town of Oyen has a population of about 1,000. It's just west of the Saskatchewan border and roughly 300 kilometres east of Calgary.
