The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a fatal collision in northeast Calgary early Monday morning that happened after the driver of an SUV fled from police.

According to a release from ASIRT, a marked police vehicle was in the area of Metis Trail and Country Hills Boulevard N.E. "when an interaction with the SUV occurred."

"Details of that interaction are still being determined and will form part of the ASIRT investigation," the release said.

Shortly after, at about 3:30 a.m., the SUV headed west on Country Hills Boulevard, entered the Metis Trail intersection and collided with a northbound truck on Metis Trail.

The man driving the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck, an off-duty Calgary police officer, was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

"The officer was on their way home after nightshift when their vehicle was struck," the release said.

"It is believed the officer had no knowledge of the interaction between the patrol vehicle and the truck, prior to being struck."

The intersection was expected to remain closed for much of Monday.
