The source of a gas leak in northeast Calgary on Friday has been traced to an animal clinic.

Just after 9 a.m., fire crews responded to the 1000 block of Falconridge Drive N.E. after being contacted by staff at the clinic, who detected the smell shortly after opening for the day.

Businesses in McKnight Village were evacuated and sections of Falconridge Boulevard, Falconridge Drive, and Falconridge Road were shut down.

"There was a smell of natural gas. In this case, there were higher concentrations. It was a great concern for the life and property of the people here," said Calgary fire department spokesman Brian McAsey.

It took ATCO Gas crews more than an hour to trace the exact location of the leak and turn off the gas.

The roads have been reopened and traffic has returned to normal.

There were no injuries to animals or humans as a result of the leak.
