The Calgary Humane Society has seized more than 50 neglected exotic animals from a basement suite in Bowness, officials say.

The animals included snakes and other reptiles as well as fish, rodents, birds and rabbits.

Some were dead.

Humane society officials say the animals had been obtained for free from the online classified ad site Kijiji.

"This is a good reminder, when rehoming an animal, make sure to assign a financial value to the pet so that the new home will value and properly care for the animal," said the humane society in a statement.

The surviving animals are now under emergency care.
