Eamon's building may get moved from storage to High River

A piece of Calgary's history may be heading down the highway, as the city is negotiating with a High River group that wants to buy the Eamon's gas station, a 1950s building the city bought three years ago to make way for the park-and-ride lot at the Tuscany LRT station.

The Eamon's sign was preserved and re-installed at the Tuscany LRT station, and now the old gas-station building will be moved to High River to be used as a car museum.

A piece of Calgary's history may be heading down the highway.

The city is negotiating with a High River group that wants to buy the Eamon's gas station, a 1950s building the city bought three years ago to make way for the park-and-ride lot at the Tuscany LRT station.

The city has been paying a company to store the Eamon's building while it searched for someone to lease or buy the historic structure.

Coun. Ward Sutherland said the city has spent more than $230,000 to move and store Eamon's, but it would cost far more than that to restore the building.

Sutherland said selling the gas station allows the city to recover at least some of its costs.

"There's always emotions attached to these types of things but we also need to be practical."

A car enthusiast group wants to restore the gas station to its 1950s splendour and use it as a museum and for other events.

Sutherland expects a deal will be signed by the end of the month.

In its heyday in the 1950s, Eamon's Bungalow Camp featured cabins, a restaurant and a gas and service station for people driving the old highway between Calgary and Banff.

Cory Hart among Eamon's supporters

The old station made a brief appearance in the 1986 music video for Corey Hart's I Am By Your Side and Hart was among the people calling on the city to preserve the building.
