E-cigarettes included in University of Calgary smoking ban

The University of Calgary says its ban on e-cigarettes inside buildings and 7.5 metres from any doorway is being followed.

Peter May, the U of C's director of environment, health and safety, says people are respecting the restrictions.

"I've heard of no instances of needs to enforce ... and typically that's probably also true on the smoking side — it's a very well understood kind of rule on campus," he said.

May said the school implemented the ban in November as part of a smoking policy for the whole campus.

"What electronic cigarettes have been done is essentially classified in the same group of things like cigarettes are in, so we kind of treat them like cigarettes," he said.

Two of Calgary's other post secondary institutions — Mount Royal University and SAIT Polytechnic — say they are still working on policies for dealing with e-cigarettes.
