Calgary police are warning the public about a "high-risk offender" who is being released after completion of his sentence on Friday.

Michael Christopher Delmas, 36, served 6½ years in prison for one count of sexual assault that occurred in Medicine Hat, Alta.

According to police, the victim was known to Delmas.

His previous convictions include sexual interference, sexual assault, robbery, possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, flight from police, fraud, theft, break and enter and possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon.

Police say most of these crimes were also committed in Medicine Hat.

The Calgary Police Service's high-risk offender program will be monitoring Delmas.

In the statement, police advise the public that the issued warning is to allow "precautionary" measures, not "vigilante action."

It also stated that they are choosing to release information about Delmas "after careful deliberation and consideration of all related issues, including privacy concerns," because they believe that "it is clearly in the public interest to inform members of the community."
